Ralph was born in Kimblesworth, Co. Durham. He lived later in Willington, Co. Durham and enlisted at Ferry Hill,Co. Durham. He was the son of Joseph & Annie and had a sister 2 years younger called Jane. Joseph was a coal miner (deputy overman) and stoneworker according to the 1901 & 1911 censuses.
Ralph trained to be a teacher at Armstrong College between 1909 and 1911.
At the time of his death, Ralph had attained the rank of Corporal in the Durham Light Infantry, 22nd Battalion. Ralph died on 27th May 1918 aged 27.

Ralph is commemorated on the Soissons Memorial in Aisne, France, final resting place unknown.
