John was born in Newcastle upon Tyne to Captain Robert Charles and his wife Isabella. He attended the College of Medicine from 1914.
Prior to completing his medical studies, John took a commission with the West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own) in December 1915. He was promoted to Second Lieutenant on 1st January 1916 and saw action in France between 1916 and 1917. John transferred into the Royal Flying Corps in 1917, and again served in France.
John was reported missing following missions in France in September 1917, and subsequently declared as killed in action on 23rd September 1917 aged 21 years old.
John is buried at Harlebeke New British Cemetery
