Robert was born in 1888 to Mary Anne Craman, of 97 Douglas Terrace, Newcastle upon Tyne and the late John James Craman (who died before Robert's birth). According to the 1891, 1901 and 1911 Censuses, Robert was born in Middlesex (where his mother was born) and the family moved to Wallsend by 1911. He had four older siblings: Catherine, Isabella, Thomas & Caroline.
He attended Armstrong College and studied Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Geology and English. Robert was a school master by age 22.
At the time of his death Robert had attained the rank of Sergeant in the Canadian Field Artillery, 2nd Division Ammunition Column. He died of wounds received at Vimy Ridge on 11 April on 13th April 1917 aged 29.

Robert is buried in the Lapugnoy Military Cemetery in Pas De Calais, France.
