William was born on 3rd January 1888 in Chester Le Street to Robert James and Anne Elizabeth Coxon. He had an older brother, Joseph. They lived at 10 Lily Crescent, Jesmond, Newcastle upon Tyne. According to the England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations), 1858-1966, he left effects of £404 3s 5d to George Gibson Mitcheson solicitor and Isabella Beaumont widow, address 9 Granville Gardens, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
William attended Armstrong College and later became an Insurance Inspector.
He enlisted on 19th December 1916. At the time of his death he is listed as a Captain in the Northumberland Fusiliers, 23rd Battalion (Thanks to the archives of the Northumberland Fusilliers for this information). William was killed in action on 11th April 1918 aged 31 during the Battle of Estaires which was the first phase of the Battle of Lys. It lasted from 9-11 April.

William is buried in the Trois Arbres Cemetery Steenwerck in Nord, France.
