Lawrence was the son of William and Anne Stobbs Coats who lived at Auldfield, Hawthorn Gardens, Monkseaton, Northumberland. His father was the Manager of the North of England Branch of the Sun Life Assurance Society. He attended Tynemouth House School, Tynemouth. Lawrence joined the OTC at Armstrong College in November 1914.
He was employed before the war by Messrs. Harrison & Hoare, Stockbrokers, in Newcastle.
Lawrence was gazetted Second Lieutenant in the Northumberland Fusiliers, 15th Battalion on the 6th of January 1915. He was sent to the Dardanelles on the 20th September 1915 to serve at Gallipoli, attached to the 8th Battalion. Lawrence was killed in action on 28th October 1915, aged 18, in Dardanelles, Turkey. He was shot by a sniper and died from his wounds.
Lawrence is buried in the Azmak Cemetery, Suvla (Turkey)
