George was born in Choppington, Morpeth, Northumberland. He was the son of John Charlton, and Ann Fenwick Charlton (née Hedley). His parents were married in 1884 in the Hexham area. His father was a teacher, and the family lived at School House, Seaton Delaval, Northumberland. He had one brother, William Godfrey and two sisters, Martha Hilda and Elizabeth Armstrong. William also fought in the war, and died near Warlencourt, Somme, on the 26th August 1918.
George served in the South West Borderers, 10th Battalion. He served in France and Flanders from 1915 to 1916. George was killed in action in Wieltje in October 1916, aged 24.

George is buried in the Bedford House Cemetery in Belgium.
There is a memorial plaque to both Charlton Brothers in Saint Stephen's Church, Seaton Delavel, Northumberland.
He is named on the Memorial Cross, Elsdon Avenue, Seaton Delavel, Northumberland.
He is named on the 1914 - 1918 Cross in the Abbey Grounds, Hexham, Northumberland, presumably because his paternal Grandfather was the late Mr G. F. Hedley of Hexham.
