Hume was the son of Margaret Cameron and Duncan Cameron, who lived at Old Mill House, Walker Gate, Newcastle upon Tyne. He had a brother, David, and a sister, Jane.
He was educated at Hebburn Quay School from 1909, and went on to attend Armstrong College, gaining a BSc and going on to become a Teaching Professor. He was a member of staff at Hebburn Quay School when war broke out.
Hume was commissioned into the Norfolk Regiment, 3rd Battalion, as a Second Lieutenant on 15th August 1914. Hume was killed in action in Guillemont, France on 4th September 1916 aged 26.
