James was the only son of Mr and Mrs J. T. T. Brunskill who lived at Holly Avenue, Newcastle upon Tyne. He was educated locally at Dame Allan’s Endowed School, then Armstrong College (1906-1909), where he took the BSc degree in Engineering, subsequently becoming an Associate Member of the Institution of Civil Engineering. He held a position with Messrs Sir C. A. Parsons and Co. Ltd., Heaton, before the war, and played hockey for North Durham.
He married Kate Brunskill, (previously of 28 Fern Avenue, Jesmond, Newcastle upon Tyne). They had one daughter.
James served with the Northern Cyclist Battalion and attained the rank of Captain. He was killed in action on 29th September 1917 aged 28.

James is buried at the Zuydcoote Military Cemetery in the Nord region of France.
