Harold was born on the 30th July 1891 in Rochdale, Lancashire. He was the youngest child of Reuben and Sarah Brierley, who later moved to the North East, residing at 52 Otto Terrace, Sunderland. He had two older sisters, Mabel, born around 1889, and Gertrude, born around 1890.
He studied at Armstrong College between 1909 and 1913.
Harold was commissioned into the Machine Gun Corps, 15th Battalion and served in France in 1916, attaining the rank of Temporary Captain. He was killed in action on 28th July 1916.
