Gavin was the son of the Honourable Patrick Bowes-Lyon and the Honourable Mrs P. Bowes-Lyon who lived at 12 Cadogan Square, London. He was the cousin of the Queen Mother.
Gavin joined the Grenadier Guards, 3rd Battalion, attaining the rank of Lieutenant.
Gavin was killed in action on the 27th November 1917 aged 21 when leading his company at Fontaine, near Cambrai, France.
