Robert was the son of Robert William and Elizabeth Bell who lived at St. Petroe, Tywardreath, Par Station, Cornwall. He attended Armstrong College between 1906 and 1909 and studied Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Natural History and Botany. During his studies, Robert lived at Hendersyde, Monkseaton.
Robert joined the Durham Light Infantry, 9th Battalion, and attained the rank of Second Lieutenant. Robert was killed in action in April 1917 aged 28.
