Thomas was born in Southwick, Durham in 1895. He was the son of Richard and Elizabeth J. Beattie who lived at 111 Hampstead Road, Newcastle upon Tyne. Thomas had three sisters, Mary, Dorothy and Elizabeth, and two brothers, Richard and Edward.
Thomas was commissioned into the Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding) Regiment, 11th Battalion. He served in France in 1916 and was wounded, but continued to serve between 1917 and 1918 in France and Italy. Thomas was killed in action in October 1918 aged 23. He fell in the crossing of the River Piave between Lovadina and Tezze.
