Henry was born in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1889, and was the second youngest child of Robert and Matilda Isabella Barber. He had four sisters, Laura Isabella, Flora Blanche, Eva Ethel and Mary Margaret, and two brothers, John Wilfred and Edmund Austin. He attended Armstrong College to study Art and, during this time, lived at 42 Goldspink Lane, Newcastle upon Tyne. He also worked as an 'Art Metal Worker', the same profession undertaken by his older sisters Mary and Eva.
Henry served in the Northumberland Fusiliers. He enlisted as a private in the 20th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers. Henry died of his wounds on 1st July 1917 aged 28.
