William appears to have lived at 14 Elizabeth Street, Heaton, Newcastle upon Tyne for most of his life before the First World War (although the earliest reference to this address is 1901). He was educated at Rutherford College for Boys, Newcastle upon Tyne, and then Armstrong College between 1911 and 1914. He was awarded a BSc in 1914 and became a teacher Gosforth Central County School.
During WWI William served with the Northumberland Fusiliers. On the 10th June 1915, he attained the rank of Temporary 2nd Lieutenant. William fought in Egypt in 1915 and in France between 1916 and 1917. William was killed in action on the 16th August 1917 whilst fighting in France. He was fighting in the Battle of Ypres in the phase named the Battle of Langemarch which lasted from 16-18 August 1917.

William is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial located in the West-Vlaanderen region of Belgium.
