John was born in Morpeth, Northumberland, to Isaac, a Councillor, and Rachel Armstrong. He was the elder brother of Edwin, Charles and Hilda Mary. John attended Morpeth Grammar School then King Edward VI School from 1909-1914. John was a student teacher, studying at Armstrong College, when war broke out.
He served at Gallipoli from September 1915, until the evacuation. He then went to Egypt, and in July 1916 was sent to France. John died of his wounds on the 16th January 1917 aged 21.
