Richard was the son of George and Georgina Appleton of 218 Bensham Road, Gateshead. He was educated at Gateshead Grammar School, then Armstrong College. The Armstrong Memorial incorrectly states Richard's middle initial is "H".
Richard served in the Durham Light Infantry, 2nd Battalion. Richard was killed on 21st March 1918 aged 20.

Richard is commemorated on the Arras Memorial in Pas De Calais, France.
Richard is also commemorated on a plaque in St. Cuthbert's Church, Bensham.
